We talked about Cloud Kitchens here. According to Statista, the annual revenue for 2020 is expected to reach USD 136,431 million. The same is supposed to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% between 2020-2024 and the market volume for 2024 is expected to be USD 182,327 million. With the market for food delivery pegged at these substantial numbers, Internet Restaurants and Cloud Kitchens would be booming worldwide.
A lot of players are already in the arena and have already made good ground in terms of defining the process as well as setting the standards for competitors. Let’s look at a few of them
Rebel Foods (Faasos) – India
One of the first and the largest in the pack with over 3000 Internet Restaurants and more than 320 cloud kitchens across 3 countries. It was founded in 2011 in Mumbai, India. It has received a funding of 342.3 million from different VCs.
Deliveroo – UK
Deliveroo (legally Roofoods Ltd.) is an online food delivery service headquartered in the United Kingdom and operates across the United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Australia, Singapore, Kuwait, Puerto Rico, and the United Arab Emirates. It was found in 2012 and has received a funding of USD 1.5 Billion.
Deliveroo Editions, a subsidiary of Deliveroo, operates Cloud Kitchens across the operations.
CloudKitchens -USA
CloudKitchens provides delivery-only kitchens to its customers and was primarily in news to a USD 100 million investment by ex-Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. It offers industrial kitchens to restaurants to get up and running at the earliest. It was founded in 2016 and has received a funding of USD 400 million.
Kitchen United – USA
Similar to CloudKitchens but conservative in its expansion approach is Kitchen United. They are picking and choosing their Cloud Kitchen location and have even refused VC a lot of VC funding which called for aggressive expansion. It was founded in 2017 and has received a funding of USD 56 million. Fun fact, they have refused more than 5 times that sum just to avoid aggressive expansion.
Swiggy – India
Another big name from online delivery services in India that has opened more than 1000 Cloud Kitchens across India operations. Swiggy claims to run more Cloud Kitchens in India than any other provider. It was founded in 2014 and has received a funding of USD 1.6 billion.
Swiggy Access, a subsidiary of Swiggy, operates Cloud Kitchens across the operations.
COVID has had a serious impact on restaurants and food delivery. However, by the looks of it, Cloud Kitchens seem to be emerging strong and may eventually turn out winners for founders/small business owners.
